Peacekeeping theories and scholars.

Shelford Bidwell 1978 –> Peacekeeping is not about keeping the peace. Peacekeepers are a smoke screen, neither allowing the defeat or victory of one party but aiming to subdue tensions. They are negotiators and observers but they are not solely peace-keepers.

A.B Featherston 2000 –> Peacekeeping is viewed as conflict resolution or conflict management, this is an over simplistic view of what peacekeeping needs to do. The current peacekeeping setup is flawed, peacekeepers entering states only after conflict has begun is ineffective. Peacekeepers should be stationed in a country at the first sign of large scale dissent and aim to create a physical and figurative buffer between the sides and to draw them into negotiations before fighting commences.

A.J Bellamy and P. Williams 2004 –> State sovereignty is the foundation of international law. A state has no right to state sovereignty if it does not, or cannot protect its citizens.
